Smeaton300 Lighthouse Coding Challenge Shortlisted For Family Learning Award

We are delighted to share that the Smeaton300 Lighthouse Coding Challenge by Leeds Libraries has been shortlisted in the Family Learning Awards!

The coding project, produced and delivered by the Digital Learning team at Leeds Libraries, was designed for families in libraries to ‘celebrate the legacy of Leeds’ lighthouse-building, star-gazing, water-wheeling engineer John Smeaton’.

The workshops brought together storytelling, history, technology and design as young people were invited to code a lego lighthouse that would react to storms and passing ships, and also get everybody safely to shore. Delivered as part of the Smeaton300 Learning Programme during 2023, the coding challenge was enjoyed by over 150 young people in Leeds Libraries.

The Family Learning Awards are a Campaign For Learning initiative and the Smeaton300 Lighthouse Coding Challenge has been shortlisted in the STEM category. Winners will be announced on Wednesday 24 April 2024.

Smeaton300 is a Foxglove project and last year was supported by LEEDS 2023.
