Smeaton CREST Awards Accessed By Over 1600 Young People In Leeds!

Over 1600 young people have already taken part in our John Smeaton CREST Awards developed with Leeds 2023.

CREST is the British Science Association’s national scheme for student-led STEM project work and our John Smeaton CREST Award has been approved at both Superstar (age 7 – 11) and Discovery (age 11-14) levels.

The awards focus on engineering based activities to design an accessible public space – based on a real life concept for Smeaton Park, developed in 2021 with Canal And Rivers Trust, re-form landscape architects, Burro Happold, Gardiner and Theobald, Leeds 2023 and Foxglove.

Activities are all student led and explore bridge building, use of sustainable materials, renewable energies, landscape design, accessibility and human centred problem solving.

The resources were developed by teachers skilled in creating accessible projects suitable for a wide range of learning styles. Inclusion has been designed into the activities with an adaptive task approach that supports learners with additional needs and provides ways to ‘stretch and challenge’ knowledge and learning. Groups from a range of educational settings have already taken part in the award, including Primary and Secondary schools, home educated students and young people at after school clubs.

The awards also formed the basis for some of the student project briefs at our School Industry Sharing Days in Leeds 2023. Professionals working in civil engineering, sustainability, landscape architecture, building surveying, infrastructure and construction worked with over 100 students from five Leeds schools. The Industry Days resulted in some really creative project work and were an inspiring experience for the young people, industry professionals and teachers taking part.

“I loved the mini beast hotel that I made. This inspired me a lot so when I grow up there is a big chance I will be a Civil Engineer, Builder or any other jobs that the professionals had because they sound very interesting”

“I loved the way we got to experience how you can do construction and building and when I grow up I might be a Civil Engineer”

Our John Smeaton CREST Packs are now available to download below at no cost and additional teacher resources can be found on My Learning. You can officially accredit your student’s John Smeaton CREST activities by registering with CREST here (cost of £1 per student).
